CHENNAI: The chairman of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) will be visiting the United Kingdom to study electricity sector
reforms in that country. The trip is timely and could be useful, considering that the state is recovering from an acute power shortage.
S Kabilan, chairman, TNERC, is scheduled to tour the United Kingdom for a week, beginning June 2. The tour is sponsored by the government of India. Kabilan will be part of a delegation of 25 members drawn from the government of India, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission and various State Electricity Regulatory Commissions.
In UK, the delegation will hold discussions with the Office of Gas and Electricity Management, National Grid and Cambridge University. "The trip will help officials understand what needs to be done to set right the electricty sector in the country and in Tamil Nadu. The benefits of unbundling and various other reforms can be learnt from our counterparts in the UK," said a senior government official.
