Power cuts are back with vengeance in Haryana

KURUKSHETRA: With the voting for general elections over power cuts are back with vengeance in Haryana. The Government which was purchasing power from different sources to keep the voters in good mood during election time is now enforcing much longer power cuts in villages and cities.
The daily power demand in the state is more than 900 lakh units against availability of 850 lakh units. As per Central Electricity Authority report the maximum power shortage in the state would be in the month of July. The maximum power shortage in the state would be 16.17 percent in July this year with peak load shortage of 37.35 percent.

CEA has assessed that the net energy requirement of the Haryana during year 2009-10 is likely to be 30684 million units .The anticipated power availability during the year will be only 28360 million units. It is, therefore, expected that the Haryana will suffer a shortage of 2324 million units in the current financial year.
The peak load demand for the Haryana during the year 2009-10 is estimated at 5970 MW with expected peak availability of 4080 MW. The Haryana is, therefore, likely to suffer a peak load shortage of 1890 MW which works out to be 31.7 percent.
CEA has estimated the power shortage in Haryana on the basis of present allocations from central sector and own generation by state thermal and hydro projects. The firm allocation of power from central sector projects to Haryana is to the tune of 1046 MW where as total power allocation is 1764 MW. This includes 431 MW dedicated power from Faridabad power house and 224 MW of unallocated power being given to Haryana. Haryana has made power purchase arrangements from NTPC for purchase of 100 MW to 200 MW during paddy season to tide over the coming hard times
As per CEA report the northern region is likely to be worst hit region with an anticipated peak deficit of 15.5 percent. The power availability in the northern region would be 222875 million units against demand of 241461 million units during the current financial year. The peak load demand in the region would 35460 MW against availability of 29970 MW.
