CHENNAI: A 24 - year-old mechanical engineer died at a private power plant near Basin bridge on Sunday morning after his hand was caught in a turbine.

According to the police, Jagannathan (24), who hails from Rajkot, was working as an engineer in GMR Vasuki plant on Pulianthope High Road. He was employed on a contract basis.

On Sunday morning, around 4am, he was working on a turbine meant for generating electricity. His hand got stuck inside the turbine during the work.

Though he managed to pull his hand out, it was totally crushed and he fell unconscious. His colleagues who heard his screams switched off all the machines and rushed him to the Stanley hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival'.

The police have registered a case. "His parents have been informed. His body will be handed over to his parents after the post-mortem. We are investigating the issue," said a police official.
