Ministry of Coal
CIL allocated 2 coal blocks in Mozambique
Government of Mozambique has allocated two coal blocks at Motaize (in Tete Province) to Coal India Limited (CIL). This is a sequel to the bilateral cooperation resulting out of discussions held in the first meeting of the Indo-Mozambique Coal Working Group from 2nd to 7th April, 2007 in Maputo when the Indian delegation headed by Additional Secretary, Ministry of Coal entered into wide range of discussions and also drew up a roadmap for future co-operation based on development of a Coal project as a hub. Subsequently, several visits were exchanged by the representatives of Coal India Limited (CIL) and Government of Mozambique.
Ministry of Coal was continuously pursuing acquisition of Coal block in Mozambique and drawing up a Cooperation programme with that country. Our High Commission at Maputo, Mozambique has now sent an intimation that Coal India Limited, a Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Coal, has been granted concessions for Blocks A-1 and A-2 coal fields at Moatize (in Tete Province). The Deputy Director in the Ministry of Mineral Resources of Government of Mozambique has also confirmed the allotment of the above two coal fields to Coal India Limited. This is the first acquisition of Coal blocks abroad, on the basis of bilateral cooperation. This allocation has been secured inspite of stiff competition from International competitors.
