AHMEDABAD: After bagging contracts for distribution of power in Kanpur and Agra in Uttar Pradesh, Ahmedabad-based Torrent Power Limited is set to
emerge as the largest private sector power distribution company in the country with total distribution capacity of over 20.5 billion units from October 2009.

TPL on Friday informed the stock exchanges that it has been awarded a contract for distribution of power in the urban area of Agra, the second city in UP, after it acquired the contract for Kanpur five days back.

The two new contracts will scale up the company’s distribution capacity from 12 billion units to 20.5 billion units surpassing the distribution capacity of Reliance Infrastructure of 19 billion units and Tata Power’s 12 billion units, sources said. TPL, which has a generation capacity of 1600 MW, presently distributes power in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat and Bhiwandi. Apart from entering UP, it will also start distributing power in Dahej, Gujarat.

TPL is investing Rs 750 crore over a period of three years for strengthening its distribution network in Agra and Kanpur. The company has been awarded to distribute power for 20 years in the two UP cities. The company will also start power distribution in Dahej with a capacity of 2 billion units from October 2009. Torrent Power has ambitious plans to build a string of new and brown field power projects that will give it an installed generating capacity of over 9,600 MW from its existing 1600 MW.
