Hisar power plant’s unit 2 shut down

CHANDIGARH: One of the two units of Khedar thermal plant in Hisar was shutdown a few days back due to excessive collection of wet ash in the hoppers of electro static precipitators ( ESP).
The unit was closed on December 17, sources in the Haryana Power Generation Corporation Ltd ( HPGCL) said. Since the systems had failed to dispose of ash, it was being done manually through dumpers.
Additional chief secretary, power, Ajit Mohan Sharan, admitted that there was glitch in the unit’s functioning.
“Trucks of the public works department ( PWD) have been pressed into service to remove wet ash from the plant. The problem will be rectified soon,” he said. “Till recently, contracts signed by the PWD agencies did not have a clause making it mandatory to use part of wet ash in construction works. The clause has now been incorporated in all new contracts,” he said.
The plant had faced the problem of overflowing ash dykes ( embankments) about fo ur months ago.
One of the two units of the plant had to be shutdown for several days after water from the two ash dykes overflowed in fields, causing damage to crops.
Tempers had run high among farmers, who cornered HPGCL officials, for what they said, had happened in spite of their repeated requests and cautions to protect crops against the looming danger. The problem of excessive collection of wet ash was reported from unit 2 of the Yamunanagar thermal plant on February 22, 2010.
The uni t was closed for maintenance of the ESP hopper and ducts. The problem was partially rectified but the unit continued to run at 60% load of its capacity for about one year.
