UP power employees threaten agitation against privatisation

lucknow: The engineers and employees of the Uttar Pradesh power corporation have threatened to launch an agitation against alleged move to privatise electricity system in Lucknow and six other cities, but the state government denied that there is any such plan. Convener of Power Employees Joint Action Committee Shailendra Dubey alleged that Industrial Development Commissioner (IDC) AK Gupta in a statement has said that electricity system in seven cities, including Lucknow, would be handed over to private companies. He said other cities include Meerut, Bareilly, Varanasi, Muzaffarnagar, Ghaziabad and Robertsganj.
“If the decision of privatisation in seven cities is not rolled back then engineers and employees will launch a state-wide agitation,” Dubey said, adding that to chalk out the strategy a meeting of the action committee would be held on Wednesday. However, IDC Gupta in a statement said that there was no such plan to hand over electricity system to private sector in seven cities. “No scheme to hand over electricity system in some cities to private sector was under consideration and no proposal has been received from the power or any other department,” he said. The IDC said that he has no information regarding any such decision. Dubey alleged that there was large scale bungling in Agra, where electricity system was privatised by the previous government and even SP workers protested against it.
