Lok Sabha adjourned over coal shortage in Bihar
V K Gupta14 March, 2012

Cries of coal shortage hit the Lok Sabha today morning and forced its adjournment after Janta Dal (U) members raised the issue.

LOK SABHA was adjourned today morning by Janta Dal (U) members from Bihar over the issue of coal shortage for thermal power plants.

Janta Dal (U) members were demanding coal linkage for Baruni thermal and adequate coal supply to other thermal plants of state. Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in latest report on coal plants in country shows that Kahalgoan and Muzafarpur thermal power stations have two days coal stock and fall under super critical category. However Baruni thermal has 8 days coal stock.

Three thermal plants in West Bengal and two plants in Jharkhand have nil coal stock on February 12.The reason given for Mejia thermal in West Bengal and Bokaro in Jharkhand are nil import of coal by concerned power utilities. Bandel and Koredama are facing zero stock due to less coal supply by Coal India. For Durgapur steel thermal plant coal supply is yet to begin.

There are 18 thermal plants in country having less than 4 days coal stock and another 16 are having less than 7 days coal stock. The coal stock in the eastern part of country is worst as there are 9 thermal plants having less than 4 days coal stock and 7 others have less than a week coal stock.

As per CEA guidelines every plant must maintain coal stock for 25 days. Coal India is not producing enough coal for all the plants of country and plants are supposed to import coal to meet their requirements.
