Power Engineers hail SC order on promotion issue

LUCKNOW: Power engineers of Uttar Pradesh have welcomed the December 12 Supreme Court order regarding promotion of engineers in various categories. While on one hand, the apex court directed the state government to promote 31 assistant engineers of general category as executive engineer, it gave a breather to 22 engineers of reserved category, whose promotion was quashed by a high court order. The apex court, however, will take up their case on March 14, 2012.
The UP Rajya Vidyut Parishad Abhiyanta Sangh, in a statement, on Tuesday, said that it expected the state government to abide by the order and promote all 31 engineers immediately. The association further said that in July 2011, another 30 posts got vacant, which should also be filled by the engineers of the general category.
The association has been crying foul for sometime, claiming that the engineers of the general category are reeling under frustration following state government stance. It was in July when a division bench of Allahabad High Court quashed the promotion of 22 engineers of the reserved category. This was challenged in the Supreme Court, which, on Tuesday reserved its final judgement till March 14.
The UP Power officer's association also said that the order has paved way for promoted engineers of reserved category to continue with their services on the same post. The association, in a statement, said that it had filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court against the high court order.
