Power employees face wrath of citizens
TNN 2 September 2009

VARANASI: While the dwindling power supply has started to cause unrest amongst citizens, the electricity camps organised for collection of bills in
different parts of the city are facing the wrath of denizens, as they are openly demonstrating their anger with boycott of such camps.

The recent boycott of electricity camp in Dashaswamedh area followed by spate of violent protests in Bhelupur and Mahmoorganj area has forced the power employees to twice before organising such camps. The power authorities are even contemplating to take help of police forces to control the irate mob.

According to Asharfi Singh, executive engineer, Power Supply division IV, the erratic power supply has caused unrest amongst people resulting in violent protests in different parts of city. To take the help of police is the only option if the target of collection of electricity bills needs to be achieved in the region, he added.

It may be mentioned here that the unruly crowd not only damaged the electricity camp organised in Dashaswamedh area, local natives also tried to manhandle the power employees, forcing them to take evasive action to save themselves on the occasion. As per report of PVVNL office, around Rs 10 crores are collected every month from over two lakh consumers in the region.
