Press Trust of India / Chandigarh August 31, 2009

State-owned Haryana Power Generation Corporation (HPGCL) has decided to set up a new super critical thermal power plant of 660 Mega Watt capacity at Yamuna Nagar.

The project will be part of HPGCL's effort to scale up total power generation capacity to over 6,000 Mw in the next four years and would involve capital outlay of Rs 2,700 crore.

"After carrying out detailed designing exercise at (Deen Bandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Project) Yamuna Nagar, we found that we can set up another 660 Mw of power project here and a decision in this regard has also been taken," HPGCL Managing Director Sanjeev Kaushal told PTI here.

The project is expected to be operational by 2012-13, Kaushal said adding Expression of Interest for setting up this super critical plant would soon be invited from global companies.

At present, Deen Bandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power project at Yamuna Nagar is a 600 Mw power project.

Also, HPGCL plans to set up a 432 Mw gas based project at Fardidabad, which would commence by 2012-13. This project would phase out the old Faridabad thermal power project. Currently, HPGCL is in process of setting-up two thermal power projects including Rajiv Gandhi Thermal Power Project (RGTPP) with a capacity of 2x600 Mw at Khedar, Hissar and Mahatma Gandhi Thermal Power Project (MGTPP) of 2x660 Mw at Jhajjar.

The total investment entailing will be Rs 4,300 crore and Rs 6,000 crore, respectively.

"The first unit of RGTPP is scheduled to commence by December 2009 and the second unit by March 2010. While, the first unit of MGTPP is set to become operational by December 2011 and second unit by May 2012," an official said.

Apart from this, another thermal project, Indira Gandhi Super Thermal Power project of 1,500 Mw, a joint venture between NTPC, Delhi and Haryana, is also coming up in the state with capital outlay of Rs 7,892 crore.

"It is expected to be operational by 2010," the official informed.

After adding the proposed capacity in the next four years, the total installed power capacity of HPGCL would surge to 6,140 Mw from 2,140 Mw at present.

Facing a severe power crisis, the total demand of power with 15 per cent annual increase in growth of peak demand, is projected at 12,828 Mw by 20120-13.

However, by that time the state would have total power capacity including other sources like the center and shared projects, of 14,285 Mw.
